Target Information
Amyloid beta peptide (Abeta/Beta-amyloid) is the major constituent of amyloid plaques in the brains of individuals afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease. Abeta peptide, 40–43 amino acids long, is generated from the beta-amyloid precursor protein (beta APP) through sequential cleavage by beta-secretase (BACE) and gamma-secretase.
Gamma-secretase, a multi-subunit complex containing presenilin-1 and -2, processes the membrane-bound remnant of beta APP to produce amyloid beta peptide.
Abeta is found in amyloid cores, neuritic plaques, and neurofibrillary tangles, and is associated with Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia, Down’s syndrome, and various amyloidoses.
