Target Information
Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein polymerase that maintains telomere ends by adding the telomere repeat sequence (TTAGGG).
It consists of a protein component with reverse transcriptase activity (encoded by the TERT gene) and an RNA component serving as a template.
Telomerase expression is typically repressed in postnatal somatic cells, leading to progressive telomere shortening and cellular senescence.
Deregulation of telomerase expression is associated with oncogenesis.
In mouse studies, telomerase is also implicated in chromosomal repair through de novo synthesis of telomeric repeats at double-stranded breaks.
Alternative splicing generates different isoforms of TERT, which may regulate telomerase activity.
