Target Information
The Myogenic determination gene (MyoD) was first identified by its ability to convert embryonic mouse fibroblast cells into muscle cells. Forced expression of MyoD (human homolog: myf3) can induce muscle differentiation or activate muscle-specific genes in various cell types.
The regulatory domain of the MyoD gene product lies within a 70 amino acid region containing a basic DNA-binding motif and a helix-loop-helix (HLH) dimerization motif.
Other related genes sharing sequence homology in the basic HLH domain include myf5, myogenin (myf4), and myf6 (also known as MRF4 or herculin).
