Target Information

BMP-8B encodes a secreted ligand of the TGF-beta superfamily of proteins. These ligands bind various TGF-beta receptors, leading to recruitment and activation of SMAD family transcription factors that regulate gene expression.
The encoded preproprotein is proteolytically processed to generate each subunit of the disulfide-linked homodimer. BMP-8B stimulates thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue, and its expression may be downregulated in pancreatic cancer.
BMP-8B may have arisen from a gene duplication event, with a duplicate gene also present on chromosome 1.
