Product Specific Information

The HB15e monoclonal antibody reacts with human CD83, a 45 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein and a member of the Ig superfamily. CD83 is expressed on cultured dendritic cells, interdigitating, follicular, and circulating dendritic cells, as well as some proliferating lymphocytes. It serves as a useful marker for mature human blood dendritic cells.

  • Applications Reported: Flow cytometric analysis
  • Applications Tested: Pre-titrated for flow cytometry at 5 µL (1 µg) per test

Target Information

CD83 is a 40–45 kDa glycoprotein expressed by peripheral blood dendritic cells. Peripheral lymphocytes can express low levels of CD83 after stimulation with Con A or PHA. In immunohistology, CD83 is strongly expressed by interfollicular interdigitating reticulum cells and weakly by germinal center cells. It is also expressed by Langerhans cells in the skin.

The CD83 antigen is a 186-amino-acid single-chain glycoprotein, a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily, comprising:

  • Extracellular V-type Ig-like domain
  • Transmembrane region
  • Short cytoplasmic tail (~40 amino acids)

CD83 undergoes extensive post-translational glycosylation, resulting in a molecular weight approximately twice that of the predicted core protein. CD83⁺ cells display a unique immunophenotype distinct from T, B, NK, or myelomonocytic cells and coexpress high levels of MHC class II molecules along with markers such as CD2, CD5, CD40, CD78, CD13, CD33, and CD36.

Associated Diseases: Plague, Rift Valley Fever.
