Target Information
PICALM (Phosphatidylinositol Binding Clathrin Assembly Protein), also known as CALM, co-localizes with clathrin at coated areas of the plasma membrane and Golgi region. It is an essential component of the coated pit internalization machinery.
Fusion proteins involving PICALM are implicated in acute myeloid and T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
PICALM is expressed in neurons, facilitating endocytosis of the synaptic vesicle protein VAMP2. Variants of PICALM have been associated with Alzheimer’s disease and may play a role in endocytosis and recycling of the amyloid precursor protein (APP).
