Target Information
Milk lipid globules from humans, cows, and rats contain a protein identified as adipocyte differentiation-related protein (ADFP). This protein is associated with the globule surface membrane and is a major constituent of the detergent-insoluble complex containing butyrophilin and xanthine oxidase.
ADFP (Adipophilin) is widely expressed in cultured cell lines such as fibroblasts, endothelial, and epithelial cells. In tissues, its expression is restricted to specific cell types including lactating mammary epithelial cells, adrenal cortex cells, Sertoli and Leydig cells, and hepatocytes showing steatosis in alcoholic liver cirrhosis.
ADFP serves as a potential marker for identifying specialized differentiated cells containing lipid droplets and diseases associated with fat-accumulating cells.
