Target Information
WW domain-containing proteins are found in all eukaryotes and play an important role in regulating diverse cellular functions such as protein degradation, transcription, and RNA splicing.
This gene encodes a protein containing two WW domains and a short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase domain (SRD). It is highly expressed in hormonally regulated tissues (testis, ovary, prostate), suggesting involvement in steroid metabolism.
The protein shares over 90% identity with the mouse ortholog, an essential mediator of TNF-alpha-induced apoptosis, implying a similar apoptotic role in humans.
Evidence indicates that WWOX functions as a tumor suppressor, and alternative splicing generates multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.
