Heme oxygenase는 heme 대사에 필수적인 효소로, heme을 biliverdin으로 절단하고 biliverdin은 biliverdin reductase에 의해 bilirubin으로 전환됩니다. 또한 carbon monoxide를 생성하며 이는 신경전달물질 역할을 할 수 있습니다.
Heme oxygenase는 substrate heme 및 다양한 비-heme 물질에 의해 유도되며, 두 가지 isozyme 형태(유도형 HMOX1, 구성형 HMOX2)로 존재합니다. HMOX1과 HMOX2는 heme oxygenase family에 속하며, 여러 가지 alternative splicing으로 다양한 isoform을 형성합니다.
