Target Information

Cadherins are a multigene family of Ca²⁺-dependent cell adhesion molecules. They are transmembrane glycoproteins consisting of:

• An extracellular domain mediating Ca²⁺-dependent intercellular adhesion by homophilic interactions
• A transmembrane region
• A cytoplasmic domain

The extracellular domain is divided into subdomains EC1–EC5. Homologies among cadherin family members are strongest in the cytoplasmic domain and EC1–EC2 regions. Adhesive binding properties are located mainly in the N-terminal part of the molecules.

Four cadherin family members have been identified and cloned from mammalian cells:

• Neuronal (N)
• Epithelial (E)
• Placental (P)
• Muscle (M)

M-cadherin is not found in fibroblasts but is expressed at low levels in myoblasts and upregulated during myotube formation, suggesting a specific role in skeletal muscle cell differentiation.
