Target Information
The NMDA Receptor (NMDAR) plays an essential role in memory and neuronal development and is implicated in several central nervous system disorders including Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, and ischemic neuronal cell death. It is also a principal molecular target for alcohol in the CNS. NMDAR activity can be potentiated by protein phosphorylation. The NR1 protein forms NMDA-activated channels when expressed in Xenopus oocytes, though these currents are smaller than those observed in situ. Channels with more physiological characteristics are produced when the NR1 subunit combines with one or more of the NMDAR2 (NR2 A–D) subunits.
