Target Information
SPHK2, along with SPHK1, catalyzes the phosphorylation of sphingosine producing the signaling molecule sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P).
S1P signals through G-protein coupled receptors and controls diverse cellular processes.
Inhibitors of SPHKs are viewed as potential therapeutics for the treatment of cancer.
SPHK2 plays key roles in regulating cell differentiation, calcium mobilization, and apoptosis.
S1P receptors (EDG family) couple to multiple G proteins and regulate cell motility, survival, migration, and interaction.
S1P is also involved in cardiogenesis, vascular maturation, oocyte survival, immune cell trafficking, and neuronal and bone cell regulation.
S1P levels are controlled by the activity of Sphk1 and Sphk2.
