Target Information
Importin-4 is a human protein encoded by the IPO4 gene. It functions as a nuclear transport receptor involved in protein import into the nucleus. Importin-4 binds nuclear localization signals (NLS) on cargo proteins and mediates their docking to the nuclear pore complex (NPC). The complex is translocated through the pore via a Ran-dependent mechanism. Upon reaching the nucleoplasmic side, Ran binding induces dissociation of the complex, and importin is recycled back to the cytoplasm where GTP hydrolysis releases Ran.
