Target Information
Importin-4 is a protein encoded by the IPO4 gene in humans. It functions as a nuclear transport receptor, mediating nuclear protein import. Importin-4 serves as a receptor for nuclear localization signals (NLS) in cargo substrates and facilitates docking of the importin/substrate complex to the nuclear pore complex (NPC) through binding to nucleoporin. The complex is translocated through the pore via an energy-dependent, Ran-mediated mechanism. At the nucleoplasmic side, Ran binding triggers dissociation of the complex, and importin is re-exported to the cytoplasm where GTP hydrolysis releases Ran.
