Target Information
Ribosomes catalyze protein synthesis and consist of a 40S small subunit and a 60S large subunit, composed of 4 RNA species and ~80 distinct proteins. The RPS6 gene encodes a cytoplasmic ribosomal protein of the 40S subunit, belonging to the S6E family.
RPS6 is a major substrate for multiple protein kinases, phosphorylated at five C-terminal serine residues in response to growth factors, tumor-promoting agents, and mitogens. Dephosphorylation occurs during growth arrest.
This protein may regulate cell growth and proliferation by selectively translating specific mRNA classes. Multiple processed pseudogenes are dispersed throughout the genome.
