Target Information
CAMK2A (CaMKII alpha) is a serine/threonine kinase that regulates various cellular functions such as neuronal signaling, gene expression, carbohydrate metabolism, cytoskeletal organization, and calcium homeostasis.
Autophosphorylation at threonine 286 activates CAMK2A, enabling calmodulin-independent activity.
CaMKII is widely expressed and plays roles in:
- Cell cycle and transcription regulation
- Dendritic spine and synapse formation
- Neuronal plasticity
- Sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca²⁺ transport in skeletal muscle
In neurons, it contributes structurally to actin cytoskeleton reorganization during plasticity by binding and bundling actin filaments independent of kinase activity.
