Prohibitin은 진화적으로 보존된 유전자로, 다양한 조직에서 발현됩니다. 세포 증식의 음성 조절자로 작용하며 종양 억제 역할을 할 수 있다고 알려져 있습니다. PHB 유전자의 돌연변이는 산발적 유방암과 관련이 있으며, 두 가지 길이의 전사체를 생성합니다. 긴 형태의 전사체는 증식 중인 조직과 세포에서 더 높은 수준으로 발현되어, 해당 3' 비번역 영역이 조절 RNA로 기능할 가능성이 제시됩니다.
