Substance P (SP)는 뇌에서 가장 중요한 신경전달물질 중 하나로 여겨집니다. Tachykinin 계열에 속하는 undecapeptide로, 인간 중추 및 말초 신경계의 신경세포 및 교세포에서 합성되는 흥분성 신경펩타이드입니다. Substance P, Neurokinin A, Neuropeptide K, Neuropeptide γ는 모두 Protachykinin-1 전구체의 번역 후 절단에 의해 생성됩니다. Substance P는 Neurokinin 1 Receptor의 주요 내인성 리간드로 작용하며, 통증 전달, 편두통, 천식, 구역, 염증성 장질환, 요실금, 불안, 우울증 등 다양한 신경학적 및 정신질환과 관련이 있습니다. 또한 비만과도 연관이 있습니다.
