Target Information
Alpha 2-Macroglobulin (A2M) is an approximately 720 kDa homotetrameric glycoprotein composed of four identical ~180 kDa subunits. It shares structural similarities with other alpha-macroglobulins such as complement components C3 and C4 and pregnancy zone protein (PZP).
A2M functions as a panprotease inhibitor, binding and capturing a wide range of proteinases, serving as a humoral defense barrier against foreign peptides in plasma. In Alzheimer’s disease (AD) brains, A2M has been localized to diffuse amyloid plaques, suggesting an important role in AD etiopathology.
