Target Information
The Drosophila atonal gene encodes a protein with basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) domains essential for nervous system development. Mammalian atonal homolog 1 (MATH-1), also known as Atoh1, Ath1, or HATH-1, is a 351 amino acid HLH transcription factor homologous to the Drosophila proneural gene atonal.
In mice, MATH-1 expression begins at embryonic day 9.5 in cranial ganglions and the dorsal CNS, later restricted to the cerebellar external granular layer by day 18, and absent in adults. MATH-1 may regulate differentiation of neural cell subsets via E box-dependent transcription activation.
