Target Information
Shiga-like toxin (verotoxin) is a toxin produced by certain strains of Escherichia coli. It is named for its similarity to the AB5-type Shiga toxin produced by Shigella dysenteriae.
There are two known types—SLT1 and SLT2. The Shiga-like toxin is associated with hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS).
The toxin binds to highly specific receptors on cell surfaces to enter the cell. Species such as cattle, swine, and deer, which lack these receptors, can carry toxigenic bacteria asymptomatically and shed them in feces, potentially transmitting them to humans.
Shiga-like Toxin-2 Subunit B is the non-toxic binding region that forms a pentamer upon receptor binding. It can be useful in vaccine development, antibody testing, and other functional research.
