Target Information
Leptin is a 167-amino-acid protein hormone crucial in regulating body weight, metabolism, and reproductive functions. It is approximately 16 kDa in mass and encoded by the ob gene.
Leptin is mainly expressed by adipocytes and also secreted by epithelial cells in the stomach and placenta. Its receptors are found in hypothalamic regions, T lymphocytes, and vascular endothelial cells.
Leptin influences feeding behavior, energy expenditure, thermogenesis, hematopoiesis, angiogenesis, wound healing, inflammation, immune responses, and reproductive development.
Defects in leptin production can cause severe hereditary obesity in rodents and humans.
