Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the TNF receptor (TNFR) associated factor (TRAF) protein family. TRAF proteins mediate signal transduction from various TNFR superfamily receptors. TRAF1 and TRAF2 form a heterodimeric complex required for TNF-alpha-mediated activation of MAPK8/JNK and NF-kappaB. This complex also interacts with inhibitor-of-apoptosis proteins (IAPs), mediating anti-apoptotic signaling from TNF receptors. Expression of this protein can be induced by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), and its interaction with EBV LMP1 is thought to link B lymphocyte transformation to TNFR signaling. Three transcript variants encoding two isoforms have been identified.
