Neuron-specific enolase (NSE, also known as ENO1, ENO2, ENO3) is an enzyme involved in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis, catalyzing the conversion between 2-phosphoglycerate and phosphoenolpyruvate. NSE is highly stable in biological fluids and serves as a marker for neuronal and neuroendocrine cells.
Expression:
- α-subunit: most tissues
- β-subunit: muscle
- γ-subunit: neurons and neuroendocrine cells
Clinical and Research Relevance:
- Useful for identifying neuronal cell bodies, developing neuronal lineage, and neuroendocrine cells
- Biomarker for neuronal injury (e.g., stroke, hypoxic brain damage, status epilepticus, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, herpetic encephalitis)
