Target Information
IFN alpha (Interferon alpha) is a Type I interferon belonging to a family of structurally related, species-specific proteins exclusive to vertebrates. The interaction of IFN-alpha with its receptor components results in activation of signaling pathways involved in innate immune response against viral infection.
In humans, the IFN alpha gene is located on chromosome 9. Type I interferons consist of 14 different alpha isoforms and single beta, omega, epsilon, and kappa isoforms. Homologous molecules are found in many species, including rats, mice, birds, reptiles, and fish.
IFN alpha is primarily produced by plasmacytoid dendritic cells, acts as a potent component of antiviral innate immunity, and modulates adaptive immune responses. Dysfunctions of IFN alpha are associated with diseases such as Hepatitis C and Hepatitis.
