Target Information
CD81 (TAPA-1) is a member of the tetraspanin family and is expressed on nearly all nucleated cells, especially germinal center B cells. It forms complexes with other tetraspanins, integrins, coreceptors, and MHC molecules, influencing adhesion, activation, proliferation, and differentiation of B and T cells.
In muscle tissue, CD81 promotes cell fusion and myotube maintenance. It also serves as a receptor for hepatitis C virus. CD81 associates with CD19, CD21, Leu 13, and integrins on the cell membrane, playing roles in signal transduction and cellular development.
Antibodies against CD81 have anti-proliferative effects on certain lymphoid cell lines and are of interest in tumor-suppressor gene research.
