Target Information

Cytosolic and membrane-bound forms of glutathione S-transferase are encoded by two distinct supergene families. Eight distinct classes of soluble cytoplasmic mammalian glutathione S-transferases have been identified: alpha, kappa, mu, omega, pi, sigma, theta, and zeta.
This gene encodes a glutathione S-transferase of the mu class, which detoxifies electrophilic compounds, including carcinogens, therapeutic drugs, environmental toxins, and oxidative stress products, by conjugation with glutathione.
Genes encoding mu class enzymes are located on chromosome 1p13.3 and are highly polymorphic. These variations may influence susceptibility to carcinogens and toxins and affect drug efficacy. Null mutations of this gene are associated with increased cancer risk due to elevated sensitivity to environmental toxins and carcinogens. Multiple protein isoforms are encoded by transcript variants.
