This gene encodes an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of angiotensin I into the physiologically active peptide angiotensin II.
Angiotensin II acts as a potent vasopressor and aldosterone-stimulating peptide, regulating blood pressure and fluid-electrolyte balance.
ACE plays a key role in the renin-angiotensin system.
Studies have linked a 287 bp Alu repeat element in this gene with circulating enzyme levels and cardiovascular pathophysiologies.
Two major alternatively spliced variants encode somatic and testicular isozymes, both equally active.
Additional alternatively spliced variants have been identified, though their full-length sequences remain undetermined.
