Target Information

Estrogen Receptors (ER) belong to the steroid/thyroid hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. The estrogen receptor is a ligand-activated transcription factor that, upon binding to estrogen, undergoes a conformational change enabling dimerization and binding to estrogen response elements (ERE) in DNA. This interaction allows ER to regulate gene transcription positively or negatively through coactivator or corepressor recruitment.
There are two forms of estrogen receptors, alpha and beta, encoded by separate genes (ESR1 and ESR2). Alternative RNA splicing produces at least four alpha isoforms (66, 53, 47, and 35 kDa).
ERs are widely expressed in various tissues and are essential for sexual development and reproductive function. They also play roles in bone and are implicated in diseases such as breast cancer, endometrial cancer, and osteoporosis.
