Target Information
IL-15 (Interleukin 15) is a cytokine that regulates T and natural killer cell activation and proliferation. IL-15 and IL-2 share many biological activities, as both bind common hematopoietin receptor subunits and may compete for the same receptor, thereby negatively regulating each other’s activity. The number of CD8+ memory cells is controlled by a balance between IL-15 and IL-2.
IL-15 induces activation of JAK kinases and phosphorylation of STAT3, STAT5, and STAT6. In mouse studies, IL-15 may increase expression of apoptosis inhibitor Bcl-xL through STAT6 activation, preventing apoptosis. It plays an important role in the growth and differentiation of T and B lymphocytes, NK cells, macrophages, and monocytes, and the activation of key intracellular signaling molecules.
IL-15 is essential for immune responses, allograft rejection, and autoimmune disease pathogenesis. It is a pro-inflammatory cytokine implicated in disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and pulmonary inflammatory diseases. Neutralization of IL-15 shows potential therapeutic benefits in psoriasis and diabetes models.
