Target Information
The PTCH1 gene encodes a receptor for sonic hedgehog, a secreted molecule involved in embryonic development and tumorigenesis. It also interacts with desert and indian hedgehog proteins. PTCH1 functions as a tumor suppressor, and mutations are linked to basal cell nevus syndrome, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, trichoepitheliomas, transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder, and holoprosencephaly. Multiple transcript variants exist due to alternative splicing, though not all are fully characterized.
