Histones are basic nuclear proteins responsible for the nucleosome structure of eukaryotic chromosomal fibers. Nucleosomes consist of approximately 146 bp of DNA wrapped around a histone octamer composed of H2A, H2B, H3, and H4. These structures compact DNA into chromatin, regulating its accessibility for transcription, replication, and repair. Histone H2B also exhibits broad antibacterial activity.
