Target Information
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a common lethal genetic disease caused by mutations of the gene coding for the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance factor (CFTR), a cAMP-regulated chloride channel. Approximately 70% of CF cases share a deletion of phenylalanine at position 508 (ΔF508), leading to abnormal chloride transport. This mutation often results in severe lung and liver disease. Interestingly, CFTR also serves as an entry point for Salmonella typhi into intestinal epithelial cells, and ΔF508 heterozygote and homozygote mice show significantly reduced bacterial uptake.
