GPC3는 세포 표면의 헤파란 황산을 포함한 프로테오글리칸으로, 주로 중배엽 조직과 기관의 성장 억제 및 조절에 관여할 수 있습니다. 또한 IGF2와 그 수용체 간의 상호작용을 조절하여 기능을 조절하는 역할을 할 수 있습니다. Glypican 계열 단백질은 GPI 결합을 통해 세포막에 부착된 핵심 단백질을 포함하며, 세포 분열 및 성장 조절, 종양 소인에 관여합니다. GPC3 유전자의 결실 돌연변이는 Simpson-Golabi-Behmel 증후군(SGBS, Simpson dysmorphia syndrome, SDYS)의 원인으로 알려져 있으며, 이는 출생 전후의 과성장과 내장 및 골격 이상을 특징으로 합니다.
