Influenza A virus is a major public health threat, responsible for over 30,000 deaths annually in the USA.
In early 2009, a novel swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus was identified in specimens from patients in Mexico and the United States. The virus spread globally, leading the World Health Organization to declare a pandemic on June 11, 2009.
Influenza A virus possesses one of sixteen possible Hemagglutinin (HA) surface proteins and one of nine possible Neuraminidase (NA) surface proteins. HA facilitates viral attachment, while NA aids in viral release. Both proteins elicit immune responses that prevent infection or reduce viral replication.
The 2009 swine-origin H1N1 strain combines genetic elements from human, swine, and avian influenza viruses, along with new pig H3N2 genes from Eurasia. Its distinct antigenic properties suggest limited human immunity compared with seasonal H1N1 strains, though some protection may exist in older populations.
