Target Information
Voltage-gated sodium channels are selective ion channels that regulate sodium ion permeability in excitable cells. During action potential propagation, these channels allow sodium influx, rapidly depolarizing the cell. The sodium channel complex consists of a pore-forming alpha subunit and two beta subunits (beta1 and beta2).
Beta subunits modulate channel expression, gating, and act as cell adhesion molecules. Different alpha subunit types are expressed in various neuronal regions and muscle tissues. Impaired voltage-gated sodium channels are associated with diseases such as myotonia.
