Target Information
The AGT gene encodes pre-angiotensinogen (angiotensinogen precursor), primarily expressed in the liver. It is cleaved by renin in response to lowered blood pressure to produce angiotensin I, which is further processed by ACE into angiotensin II, a physiologically active enzyme. This protein plays a key role in blood pressure regulation and is implicated in essential hypertension and preeclampsia. Mutations can lead to renal tubular dysgenesis and are also associated with atrial fibrillation and inflammatory bowel disease.
