Target Information
Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine to catecholamines, including dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. This O-methylation is a major degradative pathway for catecholamine transmitters. COMT also plays a role in the metabolism of catechol drugs used for hypertension, asthma, and Parkinson’s disease.
COMT exists in two forms—soluble (S-COMT) and membrane-bound (MB-COMT)—which differ at their N-termini. Several transcript variants are produced through alternative translation initiation sites and promoters.
