Target Information
This gene product belongs to the family of candidate taste receptors that are members of the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily. These proteins are specifically expressed in taste receptor cells of the tongue and palate epithelia. They are organized in genomic clusters linked to loci influencing bitter perception in mice and humans.
In functional expression studies, TAS2R7 responds to bitter tastants and maps to the taste receptor gene cluster on chromosome 12p13. It functions as a gustducin-coupled receptor involved in bitter compound perception in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract, signaling through PLCB2 and TRPM5. Expressed in gustducin-positive taste receptor cells of the tongue and palate epithelium.
