Target Information

This gene encodes a member of the taste receptor family belonging to the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily. It is expressed specifically in taste receptor cells of the tongue and palate epithelia. These intronless genes encode 7-transmembrane receptor proteins functioning as bitter taste receptors.
TAS2R3 is clustered with other candidate taste receptor genes on chromosome 7 and is genetically linked to loci influencing bitter perception.
It acts as a gustducin-coupled receptor involved in the perception of bitter compounds in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract, signaling through PLCB2 and TRPM5.
Expression is observed in subsets of gustducin-positive taste receptor cells, as well as in the stomach (antrum and fundus), duodenum, and gastric endocrine cells.
