Target Information
Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP), also known as Amyloid beta precursor protein, functions as a cell surface kinesin I membrane receptor mediating axonal transport of β-secretase and presenilin 1. APP is crucial for neurite growth, neuronal adhesion, and axonogenesis. It is a 100–140 kDa transmembrane glycoprotein with multiple isoforms resulting from alternative splicing. Proteolytic cleavage of APP by β- and γ-secretases produces β-amyloid, the primary component of senile plaques—one of the major histopathologic features of Alzheimer’s disease. Abnormal APP regulation and processing are implicated in Down’s syndrome, early onset familial Alzheimer’s disease, and cerebral hemorrhage.
