SPHK2, along with SPHK1, catalyzes the phosphorylation of sphingosine producing the signaling molecule sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P).
S1P signals through G-protein coupled receptors and controls diverse cellular processes.
Inhibitors of SPHKs are viewed as potential therapeutics for cancer treatment.
SPHK2 plays roles in cell differentiation, calcium mobilization, and apoptosis.
S1P receptors (EDG family) regulate cell motility, survival, migration, and interaction.
S1P also contributes to cardiogenesis, vascular maturation, oocyte survival, immune cell trafficking, and neuronal and bone cell regulation.
S1P levels are regulated by Sphk1 and Sphk2 activity.
