Background
This gene encodes a protein that belongs to the microtubule-associated protein family. These proteins are involved in microtubule assembly, an essential step in neurogenesis. In rat and mouse, similar genes encode neuron-specific cytoskeletal proteins enriched in dendrites, suggesting a role in determining and stabilizing dendritic shape during neuron development. Multiple alternatively spliced variants encoding distinct isoforms have been described.
