Target Information
Cytochrome C is an electron-transporting protein located in the mitochondrial intermembrane space. It plays a vital role in oxidative phosphorylation and ATP production. During apoptosis, cytochrome C is released into the cytosol, where it binds apoptotic protease activating factor (Apaf-1) and activates procaspase 9. This leads to activation of caspase 3, a key effector of apoptosis.
