Target Information
ZEB2, also known as Smad interacting-protein 1, is a DNA-binding transcriptional repressor located in the nucleus. It interacts with activated SMADs and inhibits transcription of the E-cadherin gene, inducing epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), which regulates cell migration during embryonic development and wound healing.
ZEB2 also protects cells from DNA damage-induced apoptosis, potentially contributing to tumor progression. In various cancer tissues, ZEB2 is observed in the cytoplasm, suggesting regulated localization. Mutations in this gene are associated with Hirschsprung disease and Mowat-Wilson syndrome.
