Target Information
CREB (Cyclic AMP response element binding protein) is a 43 kDa basic/leucine zipper transcription factor that binds the cyclic AMP response element (CRE) and activates transcription in response to various extracellular signals such as neurotransmitters, hormones, membrane depolarization, and growth and neurotrophic factors. Activation of CREB depends on phosphorylation at serine 133, mediated by p44/42 MAP kinase, p90RSK, p38 MAP kinase, and MSK1.
Phosphorylated CREB acts as a competent transcription factor and interacts with CREB binding protein (CBP) at serine 133. CREB is involved in cellular processes including circadian rhythm synchronization, adipocyte differentiation, and learning and memory. The human CREB gene is located on chromosome 2q. Dysfunction in CREB is associated with Alzheimer’s disease, histiocytoma, and soft tissue melanoma.
