Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the SMAD family, which includes proteins similar to the Drosophila mothers against decapentaplegic (Mad) and the C. elegans Sma gene products.
SMAD proteins act as signal transducers and transcriptional modulators mediating multiple signaling pathways.
This protein mediates signals of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), which regulate cell growth, apoptosis, morphogenesis, development, and immune responses.
Upon BMP ligand binding, this protein is phosphorylated and activated by BMP receptor kinase, forming a complex with SMAD4 for transcriptional regulation.
It is also targeted by SMAD-specific E3 ubiquitin ligases (SMURF1, SMURF2) for ubiquitination and proteasomal degradation.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been observed.
