SOX2는 SRY-related HMG-box (SOX) 전사인자 계열에 속하는 단백질을 암호화하는 인트론이 없는 유전자로, 배아 발달 및 세포 운명 결정에 관여합니다. SOX2 단백질은 중추신경계의 줄기세포 유지에 필수적이며, 위에서의 유전자 발현 조절에도 관여합니다. SOX2 유전자는 SOX2 overlapping transcript (SOX2OT) 유전자의 인트론 내에 위치하며, 다른 단백질과 복합체를 형성하여 전사 활성화 인자로 작용할 수 있습니다. SOX2 유전자 변이는 양측 무안증, 시신경 저형성 및 증후성 소안증과 같은 심각한 안구 기형과 연관되어 있습니다.
