Target Information
This gene encodes a type II transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the M28 peptidase family. The protein functions as a glutamate carboxypeptidase acting on substrates such as folate and N-acetyl-L-aspartyl-L-glutamate. It is expressed in the prostate, central and peripheral nervous systems, and kidney. Mutations may cause impaired folate absorption and hyperhomocysteinemia. Overexpression in prostate cancer makes it a useful diagnostic and prognostic marker. Multiple transcript variants exist due to alternative splicing.
