Target Information

Influenza viruses consist of three types (Influenza A, B, and C), which make up three of the five genera in the Orthomyxoviridae family. Commonly known as the flu, influenza strains can affect both birds and mammals. Influenza strains form roughly spherical particles, with a viral envelope containing two main glycoproteins—hemagglutinin and neuraminidase—surrounding the viral RNA genome and associated proteins.

Unlike many viruses, the influenza genome is segmented into seven to eight fragments of negative-sense RNA, each encoding different viral proteins. Influenza spreads seasonally, causing millions of severe illnesses annually, and significant mortality during pandemics.

Two distinct non-structural proteins, NS1 and NS2, are translated from one RNA segment using different reading frames. The influenza A virus NS2 is located in both the nucleus and cytoplasm and is essential for the nuclear export of influenza virus ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complexes.
